Sister Warriors Action Fund Launches with First Electoral Endorsement
In their first electoral action, the Sister Warriors Action Fund has endorsed Tamisha Torres-Walker’s reelection campaign for Antioch City Council. The organization also hosted the California Legislative Women's Caucus for a press conference on Prop 1 this morning.
Antioch, CA — In their first electoral action, the Sister Warriors Action Fund has endorsed Tamisha Torres-Walker’s reelection campaign for Antioch City Council.
“We’re thrilled to stand behind Tamisha, who from direct experience, has a deep understanding of our communities’ struggles and needs,” says Sister Warriors Action Fund Executive Director, Amika Mota. “In her first term as District 1 Councilmember, she has already secured funding for gun violence prevention, fought for youth and family centers to keep communities together, and passed rent control legislation to protect housing stability for tenants. Her progressive agenda brings much-needed structural change that will boost equity and well-being for all in historically conservative Contra Costa County.”
Sister Warriors Action Fund (SWAF) launches to power a transformative movement that secures justice, opportunity, and self-determination for Californians. Led by formerly incarcerated and systems-impacted women and trans people of all genders, the organization builds upon a 30-year history of advocacy and leadership development in communities most impacted by systems of incarceration throughout the state.
Today, Sister Warriors Action Fund also hosted a press conference for Proposition 1 — a November 2022 California ballot measure that would enshrine sweeping reproductive rights for birthing Californians and visitors into the state constitution. “It is so easy to vote, but it is essential that we vote. Those of us who have fought for and defended our reproductive rights for years, we cried when we saw the leaked and final decision from the Supreme Court (Roe v. Wade), but we turned those tears into anger, and that anger into action,” said Senator Nancy Skinner.
Speaking in support of Tamisha Torres-Walker, Tumani Drew, Sister Warriors Contra Costa Lead Organizer, said it was “empowering to see a Black woman step into her power unapologetically. Tamisha owns every room she steps into and uplifts the communities’ needs at forefront.”
“This endorsement means so much because Tamisha has experienced most situations that us, youth, have dealt with in our communities. Tamisha is an out-spoken and open-minded leader and advocate!” - says Egypt August, Youth Organizer.
