Learn if you’re eligible to vote, how to cast your ballot, and where to vote in your area to fight for a brighter future for all of us.

Registering in California takes a few minutes online. Already registered? Check your status before the deadline.

Know Your Rights

Who Can Vote in California

You can vote in California if you are a U.S. citizen living in California, you are 18 or older on Election Day, you are not currently serving a state or federal prison term for a felony, and a court has not found you mentally incompetent to vote. That is the whole list.

Are you 16 or 17? Pre-register today and you are registered automatically on your 18th birthday.

A Past Conviction Does Not Cancel Your Vote

Too many of us have been told our vote is gone for good. That is not the law. In California you can register and vote if you are:

  • Done serving a state or federal prison term
  • On parole, probation, mandatory supervision, post-release community supervision or federal supervised release
  • In county jail for a misdemeanor (a misdemeanor never touches your right to vote), as a condition of probation, on a felony jail sentence, or while you await trial
  • Someone with a juvenile wardship adjudication

Leaving prison gives you back your right to vote, but not your registration. Register again at RegisterToVote.ca.gov or on a paper registration card, and do the same any time you change your name, home address, mailing address or party.

Released before your mail ballot arrives? You can still vote. Go to the polling place for your home address, or any polling place in the county where you are registered, and cast a provisional ballot.
